As an HR People Advisor, I am responsible for over 200 people, both in the UK and globally. This means that I provide HR operational advice and guidance to managers and employees on anything from recruitment, selection, remuneration and reward analysis to performance management and development, and employee relations. I am also a part of our Skills to Succeed HR volunteering group, which aims to help young people to get their career on track.

I joined Accenture 12 months ago, having previously worked in investment banking and insurance. When I applied for the job, I wasn’t sure if I would get it - Accenture is such a well-known brand with a good reputation and I had no previous experience within consulting. But I should have had more confidence in my skills - I got the job and my experience here has already surpassed my expectations. The people and culture are what make my job - everyone is so supportive and we’re always encouraged to come up with innovative ideas and challenge the norm. This is probably one of the reasons why Accenture is constantly embracing new ways of working and continues to grow.

One of the most challenging aspects of my role is working across different time zones - when I start my day, some of the people I work with are finishing theirs, so organising meetings and calls with people at opposite ends of the world can be a challenge. It’s also an interesting challenge working with people from different countries, who speak different languages – sometimes things can get lost in translation or people express themselves in different ways. I think my background in cultural studies combined with the fact that I am originally from Poland has really helped me to understand and manage these differences.

At Accenture, you’re treated as an individual; a specialist who can make a difference to the organisation and our clients. There are also a variety of opportunities to network and meet colleagues from different parts of the business. I am a member of our Accent On Women network - an Accenture network which focuses on gender equality in the workplace. As part of International Women’s Day last year, we got the opportunity to attend a private screening of Made in Dagenham and were encouraged to bring along a male colleague - to show them that you don’t have to be a woman to take part in International Women’s Day. The network also runs a number of smaller events, including breakfasts and skills development sessions, which provide you with the opportunity to meet other women and understand some of the pressures or challenges they face in their careers.
