    What I Do

I have two primary roles at Accenture, one internal and one external. Externally, I work with clients to help manage change, ensure that the right people with the right skills are in the right jobs, and that leadership is aligned both in vision and messaging. My focus area is resources and I work with large- and medium-sized energy clients. Internally, I serve as the US Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Network Lead and the US LGBT Undergraduate Recruiting Lead. For the network, I am responsible for coordination of national activities, strategic direction, and general LGBT initiatives in the community. Within recruiting, I help set the strategy for our on-campus and undergraduate recruiting conferences for the LGBT community.

    Day In My Life

As I am sure is true with many consultants at Accenture, it is hard to identify a typical day. I find that my days change on the spot based on issues that arise in the client location and in the community. I think it is important that we focus on the philosophy of the job instead of trying to describe a typical day. We talk about the importance of agility and scalability a lot at Accenture. If we create the work environment that allows for the same, we can say that we truly live the message we deliver to our clients. Our recipe for success is being able to make a change, reprioritizing daily efforts, and realigning our daily/weekly/monthly strategies to be in demand by clients.

    Outside the Office

My passions at Accenture, specifically with the LGBT community, do not stop when I leave the office. As someone that has faced LGBT prejudices in society, I find great passions for advocacy around LGBT issues in the community. I am an HRC federal club member, volunteer for multiple LGBT organizations, and most recently signed on to assist with the development of a national program that aims to end bullying in schools. Eliminating ignorance amongst school-age children will result, I believe, in a community of love and equality for all races, genders, and sexual orientations. I also serve on the board of a Texas non-profit with a focus on educating middle- and high-school students on the core principles of business and leadership.

Outside of volunteer work, my partner and I enjoy lots of traveling and spending time with friends and family.

    My Advice

Accenture is a place where you can be who you are, create a name for yourself, and develop skills in any area of interest. The scope of work we see at Accenture is unmatched by any other company in the marketplace. When joining Accenture, it is not a problem if you do not know exactly what you want to do in the long term, but work hard to find out early and build your skills and expertise in those areas. Expertise and a strong network will make you go very far at Accenture. In addition, learn how to adapt to the Accenture style. The most valuable employees are those that can adapt to their environment, their clients, and the colleagues to ensure effective teaming and high-quality results.

    Diversity

I am one of the few employees that actually came out while at work. I spent the first 22 years of my life denying who I was, or at least refusing to admit it to my friends and family. It took another employee to tell me his story - the story of that employee and his partner, their life together, their struggles, and their happiness. It was that conversation that made me realize that you could be who you are and no one would judge you for it. It was that conversation that allowed me to admit to myself, the same colleague, and several others that worked with me on a project. Since that day more than five years ago, I have seen how Accenture is committed toward inclusion and diversity in the workforce. In my current recruiting role, it gives me great pride to talk about how Accenture was one of the first companies to roll out fully inclusive transgender benefits and work with our insurance suppliers to support the benefit. I felt immensely proud when Accenture, very recently, approved to add a tax true-up benefit for same-sex domestic partners that receive domestic partner benefits. Currently, employees receiving domestic partner benefits are taxed over $1,000 more a year on average than opposite sex married employees. This benefit, offered by only a handful of companies in the United States, means that my partner and I are truly equal with heterosexual couples and no longer have to worry about the impact additional and unfair taxes will mean for us and our family.
